ABOUT CHHAPAAK 2020
Chhapaak (transl. Splash) is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by her as well as Deepika Padukone in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. Based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, it stars Padukone as an acid attack survivor, alongside Vikrant Massey.[2] The film was announced on 24 December 2018 by Padukone on her Twitter account; it marks her first production venture. Filming took place from March to June 2019 in New Delhi and Mumbai.[3] Days before the film's release, Padukone visited students who were brutalised during the 2020 JNU Attack, a political act, which led to a divided response on Twitter. A few right-wing magazines later wrongly reported that the religion of the acid thrower in the film was changed from a Muslim into a Hindu character. The film was theatrically released on 10 January 2020.[4] It received positive reviews from critics.

On 10 December 2019, the official trailer was launched by Fox Star Studios. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on 10 January 2020 in India.[9] On 7 January 2020, Padukone joined a protest-gathering at Jawaharlal Nehru University against the 2020 JNU Attack and passage of CAA 2019.[10][11] Bharatiya Janata Party’s student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is blamed for the attack.[12] The visit angered BJP leaders who expressed it in social media.[12] Soon enough, the hashtags BoycottChhapaak and BlockDeepika began trending in Indian Twitter with members of the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party contributing in its proliferation.[10][13][14][15] In response, ISupportDeepika was floated which gained greater traction and by the end of the day, her follower count had increased significantly.[14][16] Actor Varun Dhawan talked about similar calls for boycott of his film Dilwale, and stated that the boycott may hurt the business, so it is used as a scare tactics meant to prevent people from expressing their opinion in public. He supported Deepika in condemning the attacks stating it is wrong to not do it.[17] On 8 January, social media users criticized the filmmaker Meghna Gulzar alleging that she changed the name and religion of the characters in the film.[18] Several right-wing magazines, Swarajya and Opindia wrongly reported that the name of the attacker who was a Muslim in real life, was changed into a Hindu name "Rajesh", in the film.[12] BJP MP and Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo called the change deliberate and "absolute hypocrisy".[19] BJP MP from South Delhi, Ramesh Bidhuri made calls to public for a boycott of the movie. [19] BJP MP Subramanian Swamy called it a defamation and informed legal action against the makers for this.[12]Mumbai Mirror reported that in past the filmmakers making films based on real life incidents had the liberty to change the names as well as the storyline in their films.[18] The visit to JNU by Deepika was seen by Mumbai Mirror as the reason for an aggressive stand was taken against the film.[18] These claims were debunked by the co founder of Newslaundry Abhinandan Sekhri, who had watched a special screening of the film Chhapaak in Delhi. He stated that the claims of the attacker belonging to the Hindu religion were false, since the movie showed him as a Muslim.[12] Journalist Radhika Sharma from PTI reported that Rajesh was the name of Malti’s boyfriend. The acid attacker was called Bashir Khan urf Babboo in the film.[12] Advocate Aparna Bhat, who represented Agarwal in the case fought at Patiala House Courts, pursued legal action against the makers for not mentioning her in the film, "to protect her identity and preserve her integrity".[

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 86% based on seven reviews.[22] Teo Bugbee of The New York Times reviewed that Chhapaak "succeeds in balancing extremes. It is at once a pleasing and buoyant inspirational story, and a realistic depiction of the brutal aftermath of acid attacks."[23] Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express credited the film for portraying "drama without dreaded melodrama" and highlighted Padukone's "solid, realised performance" to be its prime asset.[24] Writing for The Hindu, Namrata Joshi summarised that "Padukone’s performance and Meghna Gulzar’s direction ensure that Chhapaak is like a splash that leaves you misty with emotions, if not entirely drenched".[25] Ankur Pathak of HuffPost labelled it "a quietly powerful social commentary, a film that never allows you to be comfortable" and considered Padukone's performance to be a career best.[26] Uday Bhatia of Mint wrote that it "earnestly highlights a depressingly common horror", adding that it "deals squarely with its subject without quite transcending it".[27] In a mixed review, Anupama Chopra praised Padukone's performance but added that the film "hovers dangerously close to becoming a public service announcement. The messaging becomes bigger than the movie, which reduces the impact".[28] Conversely, Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com commended Gulzar for documenting "Chhapaak's grim reality barefacedly without losing sight of its character's quiet determination to fight the reasons that make such heinous crimes possible in the first place".

ABOUT THE GRUDGE 2020
The Grudge is a 2020 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, and produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise. At first announced as the reboot of the 2004 American remake of the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge (both of which were directed by Takashi Shimizu), the film ended up being a sequel that takes place during and after the events of the 2004 film,[6] and is the fourth installment in The Grudge film series. The film stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver. A sequel was announced in 2011, with a release date of 2013 or 2014. In March 2014, it was officially announced that a reboot was in the works, with Jeff Buhler set to write the script. In July 2017, filmmaker Nicolas Pesce was hired for rewrites, based on Buhler's script, and to direct the film. Principal photography on the film began on May 7, 2018, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and finished on June 23, 2018. The Grudge was released in the United States on January 3, 2020, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film received generally negative reviews from critics.

In 2004, live-in nurse Fiona Landers leaves a house in Tokyo, disturbed by events she has witnessed inside. Fiona informs her co-worker Yoko that she is returning to America before encountering the ghosts of Kayako Saeki and Toshio. Fiona arrives at her home on 44 Reyburn Drive, reuniting with her husband Sam and daughter Melinda. Kayako’s curse, however, possesses Fiona, causing her to kill Sam and Melinda before committing suicide. Detectives Goodman and Wilson investigate the murders. Unsettled by the house and crime, Goodman refuses to enter the house while Wilson enters to scope out the scene. Upon exiting, Wilson soon starts to lose his sanity and becomes hysterical when he spots Fiona’s ghost outside Goodman’s car; after which he gouges out his eyes and is committed to a mental hospital while Goodman stops looking into the case.

Some time later, real estate agents Peter and Nina Spencer learn that their unborn child will most likely be born with a rare genetic disorder, distressing the pair. Peter goes to look into selling 44 Reyburn Drive and stumbles across Melinda’s ghost, presuming her to be a lost girl. Peter cares for her at the house while Nina stays at home. While on the phone with Peter, Nina agrees that they should keep their child. Meanwhile, Peter is attacked by Fiona and Melinda’s ghosts before fleeing the house where he is quickly corrupted by the curse. When Nina checks in on him, Peter kills her and their newborn before he is drowned in the bathtub.

In 2005, elderly couple Faith and William Matheson move into the house. Faith suffers from dementia, delusions and a terminal illness, causing William to call over Lorna Moody, an assisted suicide consultant. Faith is infected by the curse and starts to see Melinda around the house, her sanity rapidly declining. Disturbed, Lorna suggests to William that they must leave the house but William reveals he is aware of the ghosts and suggests that it implies a future where people get to be with their loved ones in death. Lorna leaves and returns later to discover Faith has killed William and has sliced off her own fingers. Lorna flees in horror only to be attacked by Sam’s ghost in her car and crashes, killing her.

Months later, in 2006, rookie detective Muldoon moves to town with her son Burke following her husband’s death from cancer. Muldoon and Goodman are called to the woods where Lorna’s corpse has been discovered. Noticing Goodman’s discomfort at the revelation that she had been visiting 44 Reyburn Drive, Muldoon questions him about the house where he reveals his suspicions the house is cursed, and he wants nothing to do with it. Muldoon goes to the house, discovering a disoriented Faith and William’s corpse. Faith is taken to a mental hospital where she throws herself off a balcony, killing herself. Meanwhile, as Muldoon continues her research into the case, she is haunted by the ghosts of the Landers. Muldoon visits Wilson who also suffers from burns and claims that the curse has spread and latched onto Muldoon. Fearful for her safety, she confides in Goodman and learns that the curse is also happening in Japan and that Fiona is the one who accidentally bought it over abroad. After she and Burke are attacked by the Landers ghosts again, Muldoon goes to 44 Reyburn Drive and burns the house to the ground as she is besieged by hallucinations and tricks. The ghosts set on fire and the house burns to the ground as Muldoon embraces Burke. Sometime later, Muldoon goes to hug Burke before he goes to school only to see another Burke leave the house as she hugs Burke. The "Burke" she’s hugging is revealed to be Melinda before Muldoon is dragged away by Fiona's ghost. The credits roll over a silent shot of Muldoon's house, revealing it to be the same home where the Spencers lived.

A fourth installment in The Grudge film series was first announced in August 2011, to be developed by Ghost House Pictures and Mandate Pictures.[12] It was also announced that the film would serve as a reboot, though it was not confirmed whether the film would get a theatrical release or be released direct-to-video like The Grudge 3.[13] Later in November, Roy Lee, who was an executive producer of the previous three films, revealed that the producers were still undecided on what the fourth American installment would entail. According to Lee, they were still "hearing takes from writers on what they could bring to the table on what their thoughts are on a new version".[14] On March 20, 2014,[15] it was announced that Jeff Buhler had been hired to write the script[16] and that the film would be produced by Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe.[17][18] Buhler later confirmed in April that the film would not be based on the 2004 film or any of the Japanese Ju-On films. Instead it would introduce new ghosts, characters and a new mythology. Buhler also clarified that although the mythology would be pushed forward, they still tried to keep the "concept and spirits" of the films.[19] It was also reported that the character of Kayako Saeki, who had been a central character of the previous three installments, will be absent from the reboot.[20] In early July 2017,[21] it was announced Nicolas Pesce[22] had been hired as director and that he would be rewriting Buhler's draft of the script.[23][24] It was unknown whether the reboot will retain the characters of Kayako and Toshio, though Pesce has stated that it will be "[much] darker, grittier, and more realistic".[25] Star Lin Shaye stated, "What will make it really different is [Nicolas] Pesce, who is the writer/director, who is extraordinary. I mean he's a real visionary. I had a phenomenal time working with him. He was very open to my ideas, which he told me he never is. He said, I don't usually let actors do what they want. He said, But in your case, there were no rules. I was inspired. The ideas I came up with were inspired by what he was creating. And he acknowledged that and allowed it."[26]

In March 2018, it was announced that Andrea Riseborough would star in the film.[7] Later, it was announced that Riseborough and Demian Bichir had joined the cast, and that filming was set to start in May 2018.[27] John Cho and Lin Shaye were also added to the cast in March 2018.[28] In April 2018, Jackie Weaver, Betty Gilpin, William Sadler and Frankie Faison were cast in the film.[10]

Principal photography began on May 7, 2018, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and finished on June 23, 2018.[29][30] Additional photography and reshoots took place in June 2019.[31]

In the United States and Canada, The Grudge is projected to gross $11-15 million from 2,642 theaters in its opening weekend.[35] The film made $1.8 million from Thursday night previews.[36]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 20% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 50 reviews, with an average rating of 4.23/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Dull and derivative, the rebooted Grudge wastes a talented cast and filmmaker on watered-down scares that may leave viewers nursing grievances of their own."[37] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 37 out of 100 based on 20 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[38] Audiences polled by PostTrak gave the film an average 0.5 out of 5 stars.[36] Writing for the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle said the film was all premise and no development and wrote: "I saw this movie in the middle of the day, having had a great night's sleep, and I had to slap myself awake a few times."[39] Variety's Owen Gleiberman called the film "a reboot of a remake of a film that wasn't all that scary to begin with," writing "The Grudge plods on as if it were something more than formula gunk, cutting back and forth among the thinly written unfortunates who've been touched by the curse of that house."[40] Nick Allen of RogerEbert.com gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, saying that it is "often as nasty as you want it to be, its cheesy jump-scares and generic packaging be damned".[41]

ABOUT THE LION KING 2019
The Lion King is a 2019 American musical film directed and produced by Jon Favreau, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a photorealistic computer-generated remake of Disney's traditionally animated 1994 film of the same name. The film stars the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, as well as James Earl Jones reprising his role from the original film. The plot follows Simba, a young lion who must embrace his role as the rightful king of his native land following the murder of his father, Mufasa, at the hands of his uncle, Scar. Plans for a remake of 1994's The Lion King were confirmed in September 2016 following box office successes for Disney remakes such as The Jungle Book (2016), which was also directed by Favreau. Favreau was inspired by certain roles of characters in the Broadway adaptation, and developed upon elements of the original film's story. Much of the main cast signed in early 2017, and principal photography began in mid-2017 on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles. The "virtual-reality tools" utilized in The Jungle Book's cinematography were used to a greater degree during filming of The Lion King. Composers Hans Zimmer, Elton John, and lyricist Tim Rice, all of whom worked on the original's soundtrack, returned to compose the score alongside Knowles-Carter, who assisted John in the reworking of the soundtrack and wrote a new song for the film, titled "Spirit", which she also performed. The film serves as the final credit for editor Mark Livolsi, and it is dedicated to his memory. With an estimated budget of around $260 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. The film was theatrically released in the United States on July 19, 2019. It has grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, surpassing Frozen as the highest-grossing animated film, and is also the second highest-grossing film of 2019, and the seventh-highest of all-time. It received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its visual effects, music, and vocal performances (particularly Rogen and Eichner), but criticism for its lack of originality and facial emotion on the characters.[6]

In the Pride Lands of Africa, a pride of lions rule over the animal kingdom from Pride Rock. King Mufasa's and Queen Sarabi's newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki the mandrill, the kingdom's shaman and advisor. Mufasa shows Simba the Pride Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the "circle of life", which connects all living things. Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba, so he may become king. He tricks Simba and his best friend Nala (to whom it is expected Simba will marry) into exploring a forbidden elephants' graveyard, where they are attacked by spotted hyenas led by the ruthless Shenzi. Mufasa is alerted about the incident by his majordomo, the hornbill Zazu, and rescues the cubs. Though upset with Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba. Meanwhile, Scar visits the hyenas and manages to convince them to help him overthrow Mufasa in exchange for hunting rights in the Pride Lands. Scar sets a trap for his brother and nephew, luring Simba into a gorge and having the hyenas drive a large herd of wildebeest into a stampede that will trample him. He informs Mufasa of Simba's peril, knowing that the king will rush to save his son. Mufasa saves Simba but ends up hanging perilously from the gorge's edge. Scar refuses to help Mufasa, instead sending him falling to his death. He then convinces Simba that the tragedy was Simba's own fault and advises him to leave the kingdom and never return. He orders the hyenas to kill the cub, but Simba escapes. Scar tells the pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in the stampede and steps forward as the new king, allowing Shenzi's clan to live in the Pride Lands. Simba collapses in a desert and is rescued by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog, who are fellow outcasts. Simba grows up in the oasis with his two new friends and other animals in their oasis, living a carefree life under the motto "hakuna matata" ("no worries" in Swahili). Now a young adult, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who turns out to be Nala. She and Simba reunite and fall in love, and she urges him to return home, telling him that the Pride Lands have become a drought-stricken wasteland under Scar's reign. Feeling guilty over his father's death, Simba refuses and storms off. He then encounters Rafiki, who tells him that Mufasa's spirit lives on in Simba. Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must take his rightful place as king. Realizing that he can no longer run from his past, Simba decides to return to the Pride Lands. Aided by his friends, Simba sneaks past the hyenas at Pride Rock and confronts Scar, who was about to fight Sarabi. Scar taunts Simba over his role in Mufasa's death and backs him to the edge of the rock, where he reveals to him that he murdered Mufasa. Enraged, Simba reveals the truth to the rest of the pride. Scar, who previously claimed that he arrived too late at the gorge, attempts to defend himself, but his knowledge of Mufasa's last moment exposes his role in Mufasa's death. Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the lionesses fend off the hyenas while Scar, attempting to escape, is cornered by Simba at a ledge near the top of Pride Rock. Scar begs for mercy and attempts to blame his crimes on the hyenas; Simba spares his life, but orders him to leave the Pride Lands forever. Scar refuses and attacks his nephew, but Simba manages to throw him off the cliff after a brief fight. Scar survives the fall, but is attacked and mauled to death by the hyenas, who overheard his attempt to betray them. Afterwards, Simba takes over the kingship and makes Nala his queen. With the Pride Lands restored to its usual state, Rafiki presents Simba and Nala's newborn cub to the assembled animals, continuing the circle of life.

Donald Glover as Simba: A lion who is the crown prince of the Pride Lands. Glover said that the film will focus more on Simba's time growing up than the original film did, stating that "[Favreau] was very keen in making sure we saw [Simba's] transition from boy to man and how hard that can be when there's been a deep trauma".[7] JD McCrary as young Simba. Seth Rogen as Pumbaa: A slow-witted common warthog who befriends and adopts a young Simba after he runs away from home. Rogen said, "[a]s an actor, I [...] don't think I'm right for every role — there are a lot of roles I don't think I'm right for even in movies I'm making — but Pumbaa was one I knew I could do well".[8] Favreau encouraged Rogen and Timon's Billy Eichner, who did their voice recordings together, to improvise a lot.[9] Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar: The treacherous brother of Mufasa, the brother-in-law of Sarabi and the uncle of Simba who seeks to take the mantle of king of the Pride Lands. Ejiofor described Scar as more "psychologically possessed" and "brutalized" than in the original film.[8] Ejiofor said that "especially with Scar, whether it's a vocal quality that allows for a certain confidence or a certain aggression, to always know that at the end of it you're playing somebody who has the capacity to turn everything on its head in a split second with outrageous acts of violence – that can completely change the temperature of a scene".[8] Ejiofor also said that "[Scar and Mufasa's] relationship is completely destroyed and brutalized by Scar's way of thinking. He's possessed with this disease of his own ego and his own want".[7] Favreau said of casting Ejiofor, "[He] is just a fantastic actor, who brings us a bit of the mid-Atlantic cadence and a new take on the character. He brings that feeling of a Shakespearean villain to bear because of his background as an actor. It's wonderful when you have somebody as experienced and seasoned as Chiwetel; he just breathes such wonderful life into this character."[1] When Jeremy Irons was interviewed on Larry King Now on November 30, 2016, he expressed interest in reprising the role.[10] Alfre Woodard as Sarabi: The Queen of the Pride Lands, Mufasa's wife, and Simba's mother. Billy Eichner as Timon: A wise-cracking meerkat who befriends and adopts a young Simba after he runs away from home. Eichner described Timon as "physically the smallest character, but he has one of the bigger personalities, and I love the combination of those two things. I kind of played into Timon, as I’ve done with many characters of mine, [the notion that] he might be small in stature but he has a huge sense of entitlement, which is always funny to play," and that "when Timon speaks and when he’s quote-unquote ‘being funny,’ he's very loud and boisterous, but [his] singing allows this vulnerable side, a slightly softer side, especially in ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and other moments.”[9] Eichner also talked about having "what some may consider a gay sensibility" that he brought to the table when he voiced Timon.[11] John Kani as Rafiki: A wise mandrill who serves as the shaman of the Pride Lands, and a close friend of Mufasa's.[12] Likening his role to that of a grandfather, Kani said, "Rafiki reminds all of us of that special wise relative. His wisdom, humor and his loyalty to the Mufasa dynasty is what warms our hearts towards him. [He's] always happy and wisecracking jokes as lessons of life and survival."[1] John Oliver as Zazu: A red-billed hornbill who is the majordomo to the King of the Pride Lands. Speaking of his role, Oliver said, "I think Zazu is basically a bird who likes structure. He just wants things to be as they should be. I think there are British echoes there because we tend to favor structure in lieu of having an emotional reaction to anything."[1] Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala: Simba's childhood best friend and future love interest. According to Favreau, the character has a bigger role than in the original film.[13] Favreau felt that "part of [Beyoncé joining the film] is that she's got young kids, part of it is that it's a story that feels good for this phase of her life and her career, and she really likes the original very much. And then, of course, there are these wonderful musical numbers that she can be involved with, and my God... she really lives up to her reputation as far as the beauty of her voice and talent".[8][14] Shahadi Wright Joseph as young Nala. Joseph reprises her role from the Broadway production.[15] Joseph chose to work on the film because "Nala inspires little girls [...] She's a great role model".[8] James Earl Jones as Mufasa: The King of the Pride Lands, Sarabi's husband and the father of Simba. Jones reprises his role from the original 1994 animated film. According to Favreau, Jones' lines remain mostly the same from the original film.[8] Ejiofor said that "the comfort of [Jones reprising his role] is going to be very rewarding in taking [the audience] on this journey again. It's a once-in-a-generation vocal quality".[8][16] Favreau saw Jones' return as "carrying the legacy across" the original film and the remake, and felt that his voice's change in tonality compared to the original film "served the role well because he sounds like a king who's ruled for a long time".[17] Florence Kasumba, Keegan-Michael Key, and Eric Andre voice Shenzi, Kamari, and Azizi: Three spotted hyenas who are Scar's henchmen. While Shenzi is a character that was featured in the original 1994 animated film, Kamari and Azizi are the respective names of new characters loosely based on Banzai and Ed from the original film. The hyenas' characterizations were heavily altered from the original film's, as Favreau felt that they "had to change a lot" to fit the remake's realistic style, stating that "[a] lot of the stuff around them [in the original film] was very stylised".[18] Kasumba elaborated, declaring that "Those hyenas were funny. These hyenas are dangerous."[1] Additionally, Penny Johnson Jerald voices Sarafina, Nala's mother.[1] Amy Sedaris, Chance the Rapper, Josh McCrary, and Phil LaMarr voice a guinea fowl, a bush baby, an elephant shrew, and a topi (miscredited as an impala), respectively, Timon and Pumbaa's neighbors in the oasis.[1][19] J. Lee voices a hyena that chases after Timon and Pumbaa.[1]

On September 28, 2016, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed that Jon Favreau would be directing a remake of the 1994 animated film The Lion King, which would feature the songs from the 1994 film, following a string of recent box office successes of Disney live-action remake films such as Maleficent, Cinderella, Favreau's The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, with the latter three also earning critical praise.[20] On October 13, 2016, it was reported that Disney had hired Jeff Nathanson to write the screenplay for the remake.[21] In November, talking with ComingSoon.net, Favreau said the virtual cinematography technology he used in The Jungle Book would be used to a greater degree in The Lion King.[22] Although the media reported The Lion King to be a live-action film, it actually utilizes photorealistic computer-generated animation. Disney also did not describe it as live-action, only stating it would follow the "technologically groundbreaking" approach of The Jungle Book.[23] While the film acts as a remake of the 1994 animated film, Favreau was inspired by the Broadway adaptation of the film for certain aspects of the remake's plot, particularly Nala and Sarabi's roles.[24] Favreau also aimed to develop his own take on the original film's story with what he said was "the spectacle of a BBC wildlife documentary".[25] This serves as the final credit for film editor Mark Livolsi, who died on September 2018.[26] The film is dedicated to him

In mid-February 2017, Donald Glover was cast as Simba, with James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa from the 1994 film.[27] In April 2017, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen were cast to play Timon and Pumbaa respectively.[28] In July 2017, John Oliver was cast as Zazu.[29] In August 2017, Alfre Woodard and John Kani were announced to play Sarabi and Rafiki, respectively.[30][31] Earlier in March 2017, it was announced that Beyoncé Knowles-Carter was Favreau's top choice for the role of Nala and that the director and studio would be willing to do whatever it took to accommodate her busy schedule.[32] Later on November 1, 2017, her role was confirmed in an official announcement,[33][34] which also confirmed that Chiwetel Ejiofor would play the role of Scar, and announced that Eric Andre, Florence Kasumba, and Keegan-Michael Key would be the voices of Azizi, Shenzi and Kamari while JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph would be the voices of young Simba and young Nala, respectively.[35][36][37][38][39] In November 2018, Amy Sedaris was announced as having been cast in a role created for the film.[40]

The Moving Picture Company, the lead vendor on The Jungle Book, provided the visual effects, which were supervised by Robert Legato, Elliot Newman and Adam Valdez.[41] The film uses "virtual-reality tools," according to Visual Effects Supervisor Rob Legato.[42] Virtual Production Supervisor Girish Balakrishnan said on his professional website that the filmmakers used motion capture and VR/AR technologies.[43] According to Favreau, MPC worked together with tech firms Magnopus and Unity Technologies to build the film's technology platform using the Unity game engine.[44] MPC was in charge of all the VFX shots for the film. There are 1490 VFX shots.[citation needed] The animals were designed from art and photo references. From that, the characters were built; all the rigging, shapes, textures, and furs were rendered step-by-step for further improvement. After that, the animation of the animals was crafted by hand, based on the reference clips. The movements, muscles, eyes, facial expressions, and the way the animals breathe was animated for more than 30 species. The environment was created entirely in CGI from reference materials such as high-definition photos of the African landscape. All the FX simulations—such as water, dirt and fire—were created by combining VR technology with cameras shots so that scenes could be digitally built within in a VR-simulated environment.[25] New software developed for the movie made it possible to create scenes with the shaky-cam look of a handheld camera.[45] Sean Bailey, Disney's President of Production, said of the film's visual effects, "It's a new form of filmmaking. Historical definitions don't work. It uses some techniques that would traditionally be called animation, and other techniques that would traditionally be called live action. It is an evolution of the technology Jon [Favreau] used in Jungle Book".[46] Rather than animators do everything, the team also used artificial intelligence to allow virtual characters behave in ways that mimicked real animals.[47] There is only one real and non-animated shot in the film, consisting of the sunrise in the opening scene.[48]

The first teaser trailer and the official teaser poster for The Lion King debuted during the annual Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day game on November 22, 2018.[56][57] The trailer was viewed 224.6 million times in its first 24 hours, becoming the then 2nd most viewed trailer in that time period.[58] A special sneak peek featuring John Kani's voice as Rafiki and a new poster were released during the 91st Academy Awards on February 24, 2019.[59] On April 10, 2019, Disney released the official trailer featuring new footage which revealed Scar, Zazu, Simba and Nala (both as cubs and as adults), Sarabi, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa and the hyenas.[60] The trailer was viewed 174 million times in its first 24 hours, which was revealed on Disney's Investor Day 2019 Webcast.[61] On May 30, 2019, 11 individual character posters were released.[62] A special sneak peek featuring Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Billy Eichner, and Seth Rogen's voices as Nala, Timon, and Pumbaa respectively, was released on June 3, 2019.[63] A special sneak peek featuring Knowles-Carter and Donald Glover's voices as Simba and Nala singing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and also featuring James Earl Jones' voice as Mufasa, was released on June 20, 2019.[64] On July 2, 2019, Disney released an extensive behind-the-scenes featurette detailing the various aspects of the film's production along with seven publicity stills featuring the voice actors facing their animal counterparts.[65]

The trailers of the film led to a claim of its being a shot-for-shot remake of Disney's 1994 film. On December 23, 2018, Sean Bailey, Disney's President of Production, said that while the film will "revere and love those parts that the audience wants", there will be "things in the movie that are going to be new".[46] On April 18, 2019, Favreau stated that "some shots in the 1994 animated film are so iconic" he couldn't possibly change them, but "despite what the trailers suggest, this film is not just the same movie over again",[66] and later said "it's much longer than the original film. And part of what we're doing here is to (give it more dimension) not just visually but both story-wise and emotionally."[67] On May 30, 2019, Favreau said that some of the humor and characterizations are being altered to be more consistent with the rest of the film,[68] and this remake is making some changes in certain scenes from the original film, as well as in its structure.[25] On June 14, 2019, Favreau said that, while the original film's main plot points will remain unchanged in the remake, the film will largely diverge from the original version, and hinted that the Elephant Graveyard, the hyenas' lair in the original film, will be replaced by a new location.[18] The film is approximately 30 minutes longer than the original.[69]

The Lion King premiered in Hollywood on July 9, 2019.[70] The film was theatrically released in the United States on July 19, 2019.[71] It will be one of the first theatrical films to be released on Disney+, alongside Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, Captain Marvel, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.[72] The film began its international rollout a week before its domestic release, starting with July 12 in China.[73]

The Lion King has grossed $543.6 million in the United States and Canada, and $1.113 billion in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.656 billion.[5] The film had a global debut of $446 million, the ninth largest of all-time and the biggest opening for an animated film.[75] On July 30, 2019, the film grossed $1 billion, becoming the 42nd film to ever reach the milestone, as well as fastest animated film to gross $1 billion, doing so in 21 days, surpassing Incredibles 2 (46 days). The Lion King is the highest-grossing animated film of all time, the highest-grossing musical film of all time, the highest-grossing remake of all time, the highest-grossing Walt Disney Pictures film of all time, the highest-grossing film of Favreau's career, the second highest-grossing film of 2019, and the 7th highest-grossing film of all-time.[

Beginning on June 24, 2019 (which marked the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film), in its first 24 hours of pre-sales, The Lion King became the second-best pre-seller of 2019 on Fandango in that frame (behind Avengers: Endgame), while Atom Tickets reported it was their best-ever first-day sales for a family film.[77] Three weeks prior to its release, industry tracking projected the film would gross $150–170 million in its domestic opening weekend.[78][79] By the week of its release, estimates had the film debuting to as much as $180 million from 4,725 theaters, beating Avengers: Endgame's record of 4,662.[4] The film made $77.9 million on its first day, including $23 million from Thursday night previews.[80] It went on to debut to $191.8 million over the weekend, the highest opening total of the Disney reimaginings of animated films (beating Beauty and the Beast's $174.8 million), a July release (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2's $169.2 million) and Favreau's career (Iron Man 2's $128.1 million).[81][82] The film had a slightly higher-than-expected drop of 60% in its second weekend, but still topped the box office with $76.6 million.[83][84] It was dethroned by newcomer Hobbs & Shaw in its third weekend but still grossed $38.5 million, crossing the $400 million mark in the process.[85][86] On August 21, the movie become the second animated film to have grossed $500 million at North America box office, after Incredibles

The film was expected to gross around $450 million over its first 10 days of a global release, including $160–170 million from its worldwide opening weekend.[4] In China, where it released a week prior to the rest of the world, the film was projected to debut to $50–60 million.[73] It ended up opening to $54.2 million, besting the debuts of The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast.[88] Over its first 8 days of global release, the film made a total of 751 million, including $351.8 million from overseas territories. This included $269.4 million from its opening weekend (sans China), with its largest countries being the United Kingdom, Ireland and Malta ($20.8 million) France ($19.6 million), Mexico ($18.7 million), Brazil ($17.9 million), South Korea ($17.7 million), Australia ($17.1 million) and Russia ($16.7 million, second-largest ever in the country), as well as $6 million in the Netherlands, the best opening of a film ever in the country.[75] As of September 16, 2019, the film's top 10 largest markets were China ($120.4 million), the United Kingdom, Ireland and Malta ($91.3 million), France ($79 million),[89] Brazil ($69.1 million, second highest all time in the country), Japan ($60 million), Germany ($53.8 million), Mexico ($51.8 million), Russia ($47.3 million), Australia ($42.8 million), and Italy ($40 million).[90][91] The film become the first animated and musical film to gross $1 billion at overseas box office. As of September 2019, the film became the highest-grossing film of all time in the Netherlands ($30.2 million), surpassing previous record held by Titanic ($28.5 million including re-release)[92] and South Africa (R107.6 million, $7.29 million), surpassing Black Panther in local currency terms (in dollar terms, is still second highest of all time).[93] Meanwhile, the film become the highest-grossing films of 2019 in many other countries and regions: Austria,[94] Belgium and Luxembourg,[95] Bulgaria,[96] France, Algeria, Monaco, Morocco and Tunisia,[97] Italy,[98] Lithuania,[99] Norway,[100] Portugal and Angola,[101] Russia,[102] Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia,[103] Sweden,[104] Switzerland,[105] and Spain.[106] It is also the highest-grossing foreign film of 2019 in Poland[107] In India, the film grossed $26.3 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood or foreign films of all time, highest-grossing animated film of all-time (both local and foreign films), and one of top 50 highest-grossing films of all time in India.[108][109] In Europe, Middle East, and Africa the film surpass Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time and highest-grossing film of 2019 across the region.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 53% based on 386 reviews, and an average rating of 6/10. The website's critical consensus reads: "While it can take pride in its visual achievements, The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved – though for some fans that may just be enough."[111] Metacritic gave the film a weighted average score of 55 out of 100, based on 53 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[112] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale, while those at PostTrak gave it an average four out of five stars.[80] Kenneth Turan at the Los Angeles Times called the film "polished, satisfying entertainment."[113] Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter considered it to be inferior to the original, noting, "The film's aesthetic caution and predictability begin to wear down on the entire enterprise in the second half."[114] At The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw found the film "watchable and enjoyable. But I missed the simplicity and vividness of the original hand-drawn images."[115] Among the vocal performances, the roles of Eichner and Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively, received particular praise by critics,[116][117][118][119] with A.V. Club's Dowd proclaiming: "Ultimately, only Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, as slacker sidekicks Timon and Pumbaa, make much of an impression; their funny, possibly ad-libbed banter feels both fresh and true to the spirit of the characters—the perfect remake recipe."[120] A. A. Dowd, writing for The A.V. Club, summarized the film as "Joyless, artless, and maybe soulless, it transforms one of the most striking titles from the Mouse House vault into a very expensive, star-studded Disneynature film." Dowd bemoaned the film's insistence on realism, commenting, "We're watching a hollow bastardization of a blockbuster, at once completely reliant on the audience's pre-established affection for its predecessor and strangely determined to jettison much of what made it special."[120] Scott Mendelson at Forbes condemned the film as a "crushing disappointment": "At almost every turn, this redo undercuts its own melodrama by downplaying its own emotions."[116] David Ehrlich of IndieWire panned the film, writing, "Unfolding like the world's longest and least convincing deepfake, Jon Favreau's (almost) photorealistic remake of The Lion King is meant to represent the next step in Disney's circle of life. Instead, this soulless chimera of a film comes off as little more than a glorified tech demo from a greedy conglomerate — a well-rendered but creatively bankrupt self-portrait of a movie studio eating its own tail."

ABOUT THE ANGRY BIRD MOVIE 2
The Angry Birds Movie 2 (also referred to as Angry Birds 2) is a 2019 computer-animated comedy film based on Rovio Entertainment's Angry Birds video game series, produced by Columbia Pictures, Rovio Animation and Sony Pictures Animation,[N 1] and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The sequel to The Angry Birds Movie (2016), the film was directed by Thurop Van Orman and co-directed by John Rice (in their directorial debuts) from a screenplay by Peter Ackerman, Eyal Podell, and Jonathon E. Stewart. Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Tony Hale, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage reprise their roles from the first film, with newcomers Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, and Eugenio Derbez joining the ensemble cast. In the film, Red, Chuck, and Bomb are forced to team up with Leonard and the rest of the pigs when an advanced weapon threatens both Bird and Piggy Island. Production on a sequel to The Angry Birds Movie began in August 2016, with the goal being that the sequel improves upon the first film. New ideas for the film were conceived, with the premise being that the birds and pigs work together to save themselves, which typically does not happen in most Angry Birds games. New characters for the film were announced in March 2019 along with new cast members. Heitor Pereira returned to compose the film's score, with artists such as Kesha and Luke Combs contributing tracks for the film.[5][6][7] The film was theatrically released on August 2, 2019 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and in the United States on August 14. It has grossed $150 million worldwide and received positive reviews,[8] with critics considering it an improvement over its predecessor. It is also the highest ranked video game movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes.[9]

3 years after Red became the hero of Bird Island, he now runs a business protecting it smoothly with Chuck and Bomb. They and the rest of the birds and pigs are in a constant prank war against each other after Piggy Island, which was destroyed in a prior battle with the birds,[N 2] is rebuilt. Eventually, a giant ice ball from a nearby isle called Eagle Island hits the sea near Piggy Island, forcing the pigs to seek an emergency truce with the birds. Zeta, the leader of Eagle Island, is fed up with her frozen surroundings and wants to occupy the two islands by shooting ice balls from an advanced super-weapon to force their inhabitants to evacuate. Meanwhile, three hatchlings, one of whom is Terence and Matilda's daughter Zoe, plan to reenact a battle between birds and pigs using Zoe's three egg siblings at a beach, but the eggs drift out to sea by accident. They set sail to retrieve them, but once they catch up to them, a whale blows them into a cloud. They manage to get them down after inflating Zoe into the air only to misplace them again. Chuck and Bomb force Red to join them in a speed dating activity, where Red meets Chuck's sister Silver, an intelligent engineering student who deems him incompatible.[N 3] Leonard Mudbeard, the King of Piggy Island, meets Red at his house and convinces him to build an alliance with the pigs. They recruit Bomb, Chuck, Mighty Eagle and Silver. A team meeting in Mighty Eagle's cave is disrupted when an ice ball hits Eagle Mountain, destroying a portion of the mountain during the process. As the team prepare to travel to Eagle Island by submarine, Red assures the civilians that they do not need to evacuate. Once there, Mighty Eagle confesses that Zeta is his ex-fiancée whom he abandoned due to cowardice, and he retreated to Bird Island. Red insists on fighting alone but Silver decides to follow him instead. They intrude the base from the mouth of the weapon only to be captured by the guards. The other team members disguise themselves as a Trojan Eagle and grab a key card to get into the base. Their disguise rips apart, but not before they drive the eagle guards into a breakdance battle, allowing them to escape. Elsewhere, the three hatchlings finally find the eggs on a small island, guarded by a snake. They defeat it and plan to drift back to Bird Island, but arrive at Piggy Island by mistake and are greeted by three piglets whom they travel with by hot air balloon. As Red and Silver are confined with their extremities frozen to inflatable recliners, Zeta tells them her plan to fire ice balls filled with lava at both islands. Red, who regrets not telling the islanders to evacuate, admits his selfish desire to be liked by everyone to Silver, who comforts him and frees them both using her long crest-braids, reuniting with the team. Red gives up leadership to Silver, who establishes a plan to destroy the weapon. Silver and Red put themselves in an ice ball and roll on a rail towards Zeta's super-weapon, but the plan fails and the whole team are confronted by Zeta and her guards, giving her a chance to fire the weapon. Suddenly, Mighty Eagle arrives to stop and apologize to Zeta and tries to make things right with her. But she brushes him off, revealing she got over him a long time ago, exposes his real name as Ethan and that he abandoned his daughter, her servant, Debbie. While Zeta is distracted, Silver tells Chuck to tie up the weapon using her super string, which catches and decelerates the lava balls after Zeta fires them. As the string breaks, the hatchlings and the piglets passing by Eagle Island help grasp it. The lava balls slide back into the weapon, destroying the whole base. Everyone escapes, and Mighty Eagle protects Debbie from being crushed by a metal plate, redeeming himself to her and Zeta. Mighty Eagle and Zeta get married on Bird Island, with Red as the chief witness. Everyone praises Red for saving the islands, but he credits Silver and the team for doing so, unveiling a Mount Rushmore-style monument to them, and to his surprise, being even more beloved for his honesty and selflessness. The birds and the pigs have a huge party to celebrate while Red and Silver begin a romantic relationship and Chuck comes in to interrupt the two. In a mid-credits scene, the hatchlings put the eggs back home, but three snakelets hatch instead. The injured mother snake comes and exchanges the babies with them, only for the three new hatchlings to drift out to sea again, waving goodbye to Zoe, to her dismay.

A sequel to The Angry Birds Movie was announced in August 2016.[18] It will be directed by The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack creator Thurop Van Orman, co-directed by John Rice, and written by Peter Ackerman. John Cohen will return from The Angry Birds Movie to serve as producer, with animation again handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks.[19] Imageworks' sister studio Sony Pictures Animation released the film under their banner, despite having dropped out of co-producing the project beforehand and had not co-produced the first film either.[20] In the summer of 2017, production designer Pete Oswald stated that the sequel would be more of an adventure movie that introduces new characters and locations into the world first established in The Angry Birds Movie. While he was not in a position to offer further details about the plot and characters, which remained unknown until the months before the film's release, he expressed hope that it would be a better film than the first installment.[5] The creative decision to break from the games' source material and have the Birds and Pigs end their conflict and form an alliance to face a greater threat was one that was made out of a desire to surprise audiences with a new experience with the same characters, as well as attempt to outdo what was accomplished in the first film with an unprecedented level of creative freedom available.[21] Josh Gad stated that the production team went forward with such idea because it was not only an "ingenious" one, but also because they felt it would feel most appropriate in light of the increasingly polarized political climate at the time, as people who disagree on significant issues struggle to find common ground.[6]

In April 2018, the majority of the voice cast was announced. Sudeikis, Gad, McBride, Rudolph, Hader, and Dinklage will reprise their roles from the first film. Jones will voice a new female villain,[22][23] revealed to be Zeta in the teaser trailer.[24] In December 2018, Nicki Minaj joined the cast of the film.[25] Upon its release, the teaser trailer briefly revealed that Hal, a green boomerang bird from the first film, will return in the sequel.[26] Anthony Padilla would return to voice Hal.[27] The following day, producer John Cohen announced in a tweet that Awkwafina will voice Courtney, the first named female pig in the Angry Birds franchise that briefly appeared in the teaser.[28] When the film's first full trailer was released on March 27, 2019, more details about the sequel's characters and their voice roles were revealed. Among several new characters confirmed to appear in the movie was Silver, a bird first introduced in the Angry Birds 2 game.[10] In June, People revealed the identity of the white bird living with Zeta in the teaser trailer as Debbie, voiced by Tiffany Haddish who was one of several voice actors not listed in the initial casting.[15] Later that month, the film's final trailer revealed that Terence, a large red bird from the first film, will appear without Sean Penn reprising his voice role.[29]

Unlike the previous film, the sequel was co-produced with Rovio Animation and Sony Pictures Animation. While it was possible to reuse assets from the first film instead of starting from scratch, significant work was needed to make them compatible with new technological systems that were adopted in the past few years. The animators faced great challenges attempting to create more realistic feather systems for the Birds' plumage, even with the help of Sony Pictures Imageworks' existing feather system that was first used in Stuart Little, especially when it came to designing the villain Zeta, the hardest character to animate in the film with over 1,000 controls, a very complex face structure and a tall, flexible torso. The team also faced a demanding task in designing visual effects for snow, ice, water and lava for the film and production was also affected by the unavailability of certain animators who were being used to complete Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse months prior, as well as the amount of time lost due to Sony moving the film's release date ahead by more than half a month.[30]

Heitor Pereira, who previously composed the first film, returned to compose the score of The Angry Birds Movie 2. On July 25, 2019, American singer-songwriter Kesha released her song "Best Day" for the film as a single.[31] Days later, Luke Combs released a song, "Let's Just Be Friends" for the film as a single as well.[7] Both singles were played in the film's end credits.

Sony released a teaser trailer and poster for the film on February 21, 2019.[26] A month later, the film's first full trailer was released[32] In late June, a final trailer was released.[33] As with the first film, Sony also attempted to connect the film to certain social causes while marketing it, leveraging the premise of the threat of worlds being frozen to call attention to urgent action on climate change[34] and using Silver, who is depicted as a technical expert, as a model to inspire more young women to pursue STEM disciplines.[35] The film was theatrically released in the United States on August 14, 2019, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the debut of the original Angry Birds game. The film was originally scheduled to be released on September 20, 2019, but was moved two weeks from its original release date to September 6, 2019, then three weeks to August 16, 2019, finally two days earlier to August 14, 2019. [36][37][38][39][40][41] It was released two weeks earlier on August 2 in the United Kingdom and Ireland.[42] The film's North American theatrical release was preceded by Hair Love, a Kickstarter campaign short created by Matthew A. Cherry and Bruce W. Smith.[43]

The Angry Birds Movie 2 has grossed $41.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $108.3 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $150 million.[3][4] In the United States and Canada, the film was projected to gross $16–18 million from 3,800 theaters over its first six days of release.[47] It made $2.6 million on its first day, ranking fifth and $5.7 million on its second.[48] It ended up making $16.2 million over the six-day span (including an opening weekend of $10.6 million), finishing in fifth. It was less than a third of the first film's $38.1 million debut, and was blamed on the marketing making the sequel look the same as the first, as well as the crowded marketplace.[49]

On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 73% based on 106 reviews, with an average rating of 5.7/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Like its non-aerodynamic title characters, The Angry Birds Movie 2 takes improbable yet delightfully entertaining flight, landing humorous hits along the way."[50] According to Rotten Tomatoes, it is the best-reviewed film adaptation of a video game on their website and the highest score for an animated video game movie and is rated higher than the first film.[N 4][51][52] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 60 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[8] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, the same score earned by its predecessor. It received an average 4 out of 5 stars and 72% "definite recommend" from parents and kids under 12 on PostTrak.[48] Guy Lodge of Variety summarized his review with: "Perked up by some ingenious slapstick and Leslie Jones' inspired voice work, this gumball-bright sequel to 2016's game-based spinoff is another unexpected pleasure."[53] Sandie Chen of Common Sense Media gave the film a 3/5 stating, "Silly pranks, an ace voice cast, and a super-team mission storyline make this fast-paced sequel more fun than the original. It's a predictably well-intentioned second installment, in which the birds and pigs are forced to work together against an even more formidable foe. It also shows how Red's insecurity lingers, since he was only recently accepted and respected. Although some of the movie's jokes and sight gags are recycled (because, frankly, it's unlikely that little kids will ever get tired of naked piggy-butt jokes), the addition of the third mystery island is interesting enough to keep younger audiences guessing."[54] Bob Hoose of Plugged In praised the humor, stating, "Surprisingly, the whole frenetic animated escapade ends up being pretty entertaining and funny. Even adults will, at some point, snort out an unexpected chortle."[55] Simon Thompson of IGN gave the film a 6/10 stating, "The Angry Birds Movie 2 does what you’d expect it to do, some nice touches move the franchise forward, but it could have dug deeper as some other franchises have. The whole is less than the sum of its parts, but those parts just about make the grade. Kids or a certain age will love it, and ultimately that’s all that really matters here."[56]
