ABOUT KHUDA HAAFIZ 2020
Khuda Haafiz (transl. May God be your protector)[a] is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film written and directed by Faruk Kabir and produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak under Panorama Studios.[3] It stars Vidyut Jammwal and Shivaleeka Oberoi, with Annu Kapoor, Aahana Kumra and Shiv Panditt in supporting roles.[4] Set during the financial crisis of 2007–2008, the film is inspired by true events and follows Sameer Chaudhary, a young man who races against time to rescue his kidnapped wife Nargis from flesh traders.
The film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 14 August 2020.[1]
Detained by cops in a fictional Middle East country named Noman, Sameer Chaudhary (Vidyut Jammwal) agrees to reveal everything that led to his arrest, to I.K. Mishra (Ikhlaque Khan), an Indian embassy official. A flashback unfolds, where Sameer is a software engineer who marries a woman named Nargis (Shivaleeka Oberoi) in 2007. Their lives turn upside down when a financial crisis in 2008 leaves them both jobless. Three months later, they get jobs in Noman with the help of Nadeem (Vipin Sharma), an employee at Ansaar Overseas Recruitment. Nargis leaves first and Sameer stays so that he can arrive once his documents are ready in a few days. After her arrival in Noman, Nargis calls Sameer and pleads for help. Sameer interrogates Nadeem with the help of cops and arranges for travel to Noman, and upon his arrival meets Usman Hamid Ali Murad (Annu Kapoor), a taxi driver who drives him to a store. After exchanging money and buying a local SIM card, Sameer dials every number provided by Nadeem but none is reachable. He asks Usman to take him to the address given by Nadeem but learns there's no such address. Usman takes Sameer to the police station, where Sameer learns on phone that Nadeem has gone missing. With cops not helping him, Sameer approaches the Indian embassy where a woman agrees to contact a higher official. Soon, Sameer poses as the member of a telecom company and acquires the address of the person from whose phone Nargis contacted him. Learning the man is named Shirazi, Sameer goes to his address but doesn't find him. Later, Usman and Sameer learn from the former's friend about Shirazi's involvement in flesh trade. Sameer visits brothels with Usman in search of Nargis and finds her in one, but as she recognizes him, Sameer is attacked by the owners and undergoes a violent transformation as he kills a lot of men in the ensuing fight, followed by a car chase that ends with a crash and his arrest while an injured Usman is admitted to hospital.
Back to present, as Sameer has finished narrating this to the official, he is approached by a cop named Faiz Abu Malik (Shiv Panditt) who decides to help him with his team, including officer Tamena Hamid. Together, they view the CCTV footage of Noman airport where they see Nargis arriving and then entering a black van, outside which a mysterious bald man is seen. The bald man is soon revealed to be Iztek Regini, an Algerian modelling coordinator who, on the other hand, orders the killing of Nargis. Soon, Faiz and Tamena come across a charred corpse and believe it to be Nargis. Sameer refuses to believe it's her, but looking at her pendant, he is shattered. Following her funeral, Sameer is handed over compensation and tickets to India. In the meantime, Tamena learns Nargis is alive and the corpse they found was of a different woman. She and Faiz try to find Sameer, before learning he never boarded the flight. Now willing to seek revenge, Sameer posts a resume as a foreign woman to meet Iztek and arranges a gun. Disguised as the girl, Sameer arrives at Iztek's house and holds him on gunpoint. The two violently fight, with Sameer about to kill Iztek before the latter reveals Nargis is alive and the corpse was a decoy. Soon, Faiz and Tamena, who've told Usman about Nargis being alive, arrive along with him and confirm the same. However, Faiz is revealed to be Iztek's ally after he takes the gun from Sameer and gets into a fight with Tamena. Tamena subdues Faiz long enough to allow Sameer to escape. he finds the truck containing Nargis and other women adn escapes, along with an injured Usman who gets shot in the leg while climbing onto the truck. Faiz kills Tamena and frames Sameer. An ensuing chase leaves Iztek wounded behind while Faiz meets a criminal who is his crime partner and the boss of Iztek. This is photographed by an undercover agent who exposes Faiz. As Sameer drives the truck to the ISA headquarters where Mishra is in a meeting with the ISA commander, he is captured and held on gunpoint by Faiz, before his betrayal is revealed by the commissioner who orders his men to stand down. Sameer and Faiz engage in a fistfight where Sameer beats Faiz down. Nargis and other women are freed and Tamena is given a State funeral. Sometimes later, A recovering Usman meets the couple and expresses his desire to visit India some day. He glances at Nargis before blessing them as they depart for India by saying "Khuda Haafiz" with a smile.
In the end, Faiz wakes up in a pound in the middle of a desert in front of a Firing Squad for his crimes. He tries to reason with them, and then starts cursing the guards before they shoot him to death.

ABOUT GHOST RIDER 2007
Ghost Rider is a 2007 American superhero film[2] based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The film was written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, and stars Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider, with Eva Mendes, Wes Bentley, Sam Elliott, Donal Logue, Matt Long, and Peter Fonda in supporting roles.
Ghost Rider was released on February 16, 2007 in the United States. The film was met with negative reviews from critics, but was a box office success, earning $228.7 million worldwide on a $110 million budget. Ghost Rider was released on DVD, Blu-ray and UMD on June 12, 2007. A sequel, titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, was released on February 17, 2012, with Cage reprising his role.
The demon Mephistopheles sends his bounty hunter of the damned, the Ghost Rider, to retrieve the contract of San Venganza for control of a thousand corrupt souls. Seeing that the contract would give Mephistopheles the power to bring hell on Earth, the Rider refuses and escapes with it.
In 1986, Mephistopheles reaches out to 17-year-old Johnny Blaze, offering to cure his father's cancer in exchange for Johnny's soul. The next morning, Johnny awakens to discover the cancer cured, but his father then dies from burns sustained in a stunt accident. Johnny accuses Mephistopheles of causing his father's death, but Mephistopheles considers their contract fulfilled and promises to see him again.
In 2007, Johnny has become a famous stunt motorcycle rider, and runs into his former sweetheart Roxanne Simpson, now a news reporter, whom he abandoned after his father's death. He convinces her to attend a dinner date. Mephistopheles’ son Blackheart comes to Earth and seeks the aid of the Hidden - three fallen angels bonded with the elements of air, earth, and water - to find the lost contract of San Venganza. Mephistopheles makes Johnny the new Ghost Rider and offers to return his soul if he defeats Blackheart. Johnny transforms into the Ghost Rider- his body burning, skin falling up to his skeleton, which too burns forever- and kills the earth angel Gressil. He then uses the Penance Stare – a power that causes mortals to feel all the pain they have caused others which sears their soul – on a thug. The next day, he meets a man called the Caretaker, who knows about the Ghost Rider's history, assuring Johnny that what happened was real and will happen again, especially at night when he is near an evil soul.
Arriving home, Johnny finds Roxanne waiting and reveals himself as the Devil's bounty hunter. Unconvinced, she walks away in disbelief. After a brief imprisonment for murders Blackheart committed, Johnny kills the air angel Abigor and escapes from the police. He returns to the Caretaker, who tells him of his predecessor Carter Slade, a Texas Ranger who hid the contract of San Venganza. At home, Johnny discovers that Blackheart has killed his friend Mack and taken Roxanne captive, intending to kill her if Johnny does not deliver the contract. Johnny tries to use the Penance Stare on Blackheart but it proves ineffective as Blackheart has no soul. Blackheart then orders Johnny to retrieve the contract and bring it to him in San Venganza.
Johnny returns to the Caretaker, demanding the contract to save Roxanne. The Caretaker reveals that it is hidden inside a spade and telling Johnny that he is more powerful than his predecessors because he sold his soul for love rather than greed before giving the contract after an initial distrust. The Caretaker then transforms with Blaze now knowing that the Caretaker was actually Carter Slade. Slade then leads Johnny to San Venganza and gives him a lever-action shotgun before saying his goodbyes and then fading away.
After killing the water angel Wallow, Johnny gives Blackheart the contract. He transforms into the Ghost Rider to subdue Blackheart, but is rendered powerless at sunrise. Using the contract to absorb the thousand souls, Blackheart attempts to kill Johnny but is distracted when Roxanne uses Johnny's discarded shotgun to separate them. Johnny shoots Blackheart with the shotgun, that turns into a hellfire shotgun due to being in the shadows, and uses his Penance Stare to render him catatonic, burning all the corrupt souls within Blackheart.
Mephistopheles then appears and returns Johnny his soul, offering to take back the curse of the Ghost Rider. Determined not to make another deal, Johnny declines, declaring he will use his power against the demon and against all harm that comes to the innocent. Infuriated, Mephistopheles vows to make Johnny pay and disappears with Blackheart's body. Roxanne tells Johnny that he has his second chance and kisses him. Johnny rides away on his motorcycle, preparing for his new life as the Ghost Rider.

Marvel Studios began development for Ghost Rider as early as 1992 and were in discussions with potential distributors.[8] In 1997 Gale Anne Hurd was listed as producer, with Jonathan Hensleigh attached to write the script.[9] David S. Goyer developed a script and in May 2000 Marvel announced an agreement with Crystal Sky Entertainment to film Ghost Rider with actor Jon Voight attached as a producer.[10] Production was scheduled to start in early 2001 with a budget of $75 million and Johnny Depp expressing interest in the lead role.[11] The following August, Dimension Films joined Crystal Sky to co-finance the film, which would be directed by Stephen Norrington.[12] Producer Avi Arad approached Eric Bana on the possibility of playing Ghost Rider, but opted to cast him in Hulk instead.[13] In June 2001, actor and Ghost Rider fan Nicolas Cage entered talks to be cast into the lead role,[14] after having found out about Depp being a possibility for the role and contacted the director to express his own interest.[15] Norrington would drop out within a few months due his commitment to Tick Tock[16] and Cage eventually left the project as well. By May 2002 Columbia Pictures sought to acquire rights to Ghost Rider in turnaround from Dimension Films following their success with Spider-Man.[17] They brought Shane Salerno to rewrite Goyer's script.[18]
In April 2003, under Columbia Pictures, director Mark Steven Johnson took over the helm for Ghost Rider with Cage returning for the lead role. Johnson, rewriting Salerno's script, was set to begin production of Ghost Rider in late 2003 or early 2004.[19] but it was delayed to October 2003. Cage took a temporary leave of absence to film The Weather Man. Ghost Rider production was slated to tentatively begin in May or June 2004.[20]
Ghost Rider had again been delayed to begin in late 2004, but the lack of a workable script continued to delay production.[21] In January 2005, actor Wes Bentley was cast as the villain Blackheart, having been introduced to Johnson by Colin Farrell, who had worked with the director in Daredevil.[22] Actress Eva Mendes was also cast opposite Cage as Roxanne Simpson.[23] On February 14, 2005, Ghost Rider commenced filming in Australia at the Melbourne Docklands film studios.[24] Then in March 2005, actor Peter Fonda (who starred in Easy Rider) was cast as the villain Mephistopheles.[25] Johnson originally planned to film before an audience at the Telstra Dome, but instead opted to create a crowd using computer-generated imagery.[26] The director also chose to film in the motorcycle district of Melbourne.[27] By June 2005, principal photography had been completed for Ghost Rider,[28] which was set for a summer 2006 release.[29] In April 2006, the cast and crew performed last-minute reshoots in Vancouver.[30] Ghost Rider was originally scheduled to release on August 4, 2006,[31] but the date was moved three weeks earlier to July 14, 2006.[32] Sony changed the film's release date once more to February 16, 2007 to help relieve the studio's crowded 2006 calendar.[33]
Instead of a "hard drinking and smoking bad ass" Johnny Blaze, Nicolas Cage decided to give him more depth. "I'm playing him more as someone who... made this deal and he's trying to avoid confronting it, anything he can do to keep it away from him". Cage also explained that Blaze's stunt riding was a form of escape and a way to keep him connected to his deceased father, who taught him to ride. Cage rode a Buell motorcycle for Blaze's stunt cycle, and a heavily customized hardtail chopper named "Grace" which transforms into the "Hell Cycle".[34] The Hell Cycle's wheels, made of pure flames in the comics, were changed to be solid tires covered in flames in order to give the motorcycle more weight onscreen.[35]
The film's visual effects supervisor, Kevin Mack, and the visual effects team at Sony Pictures Imageworks handled the difficult task of creating computer-generated fire on a shot-by-shot basis.[36] Ghost Rider's skull flames were designed to become smaller and blue to display any emotion other than rage.[35] Kevin's Team at Imageworks also created computer-generated motorcycles, chains, water, black goo, dementors and buildings. To pull off such effects as the living morph where the hardtail chopper ("Grace") comes alive to become the "Hell Cycle" Sony enlisted teams of animators, models, effects artists, lighters & "Flame" artists. The department supervisors for these teams at Imageworks included Kevin Hudson, Brian Steiner, JD Cowels, Marco Marenghi, Joe Spadaro, Joanie Karnowski, Vincent Serritella & Patrick Witting. Patrick's team bore the brunt of the work as they created the fire using a custom pipeline that automated the set up starting with Maya animated geometry driving Maya Fluids, imported into Houdini and then rendered & composited on top of the live action plates. Patrick and his team set up the fire process and much of the front end automation was set up by Scott Palleiko and Joe Spadaro. The fire was then tweaked and manipulated to look and move believably by Patick's eleven man Houdini effects team. All of this was enabled by effects producers Daniel Kuehn and the Digital Effects Supervisor Kee-Suk 'Ken' Hahn.
The digital version of the hell cycle was modeled in detail by Kevin Hudson and based on the practical prop used in the film, it included animatable skeletal hands that came alive to wrap the gas tank during the supernatural transformation scene. The transformation scene was animated by Max Tyrie and finalized by Joe Spadaro. Each part of the "Grace" geometry had to match up and morph with a piece of geometry on the "Hell Cycle".
Ghost Rider's voice was manipulated by sound designer Dane Davis, who won an Academy Award for Sound Editing for The Matrix. Davis filtered Cage's line readings through three different kinds of animal growls that were played backwards and covered separate frequencies. Davis then amplified the dialogue through a mechanical volumizer. Director Johnson described the sound as a "deep, demonic, mechanical lion's roar".[37]
In December 2005, musical composer Christopher Young was announced to score Ghost Rider. In addition, Spiderbait, a band that Johnson befriended during filming in Australia,[36] performed a cover of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" for the end credits.[38]
In May 2005, Sony Pictures launched the official website for Ghost Rider.[39]
The following July, the studio presented a Ghost Rider panel at Comic-Con International and screened a teaser for the audience.[35] The teaser, which did not have finalized footage of the film, eventually leaked online.[40] In the same month, Majesco Entertainment Company announced its deal with Marvel to acquire worldwide rights to produce the video game Ghost Rider for the PS2, PSP, and Game Boy Advance consoles.[41]
In December 2005, the studio presented a first glimpse of Ghost Rider in a ten-second footage piece on the official site.[42]
In April 2006, Sideshow Collectibles announced the sale of a Ghost Rider maquette based on the concept art of the film.[43]
The following May, domestic and international teaser trailers for Ghost Rider were launched at Apple.[44]
The Ghost Rider was also featured in a commercial for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services in which the character presented his income tax forms to a clerk for processing to receive a quick refund check.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released the film on June 12, 2007 as a single-disc Theatrical Cut DVD, two-disc Extended Cut DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and UMD. Special features on the Extended Cut DVD include two commentary tracks, a comic book history feature, and a making of the film featurette.[45]
Ghost Rider was commercially released in the United States on February 16, 2007. The film grossed $15,420,123 on its opening day,[46] while earning $45,388,836 for its opening weekend. The film earned $52,022,908 over the four-day President's Day weekend, with a per-theater average of $US 14,374 in 3,619 theaters.[47] The film's total earnings were $228,738,393 worldwide of which $115,802,596 was from North America.[7]
On Rotten Tomatoes, Ghost Rider has a score of 27% out of 139 reviews, with an average rating of 4.2/10. The site's critical consensus states: "Ghost Rider is a sour mix of morose, glum histrionics amidst jokey puns and hammy dialogue".[48] Metacritic gave the film a weighted average score of 35 out of 100 based on reviews from 20 critics.[49] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a grade B.[50]
Michael Ordoña of the Los Angeles Times[51] and Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times[52] expressed disappointment in the film. Ordoña cited the "satanic references" and "judgmental" elements of Cage's character,[51] and Catsoulis said Johnny Blaze is "more funny than frightening".[52] Although Eric Alt of the Chicago Tribune praised the computer-generated effects of the film, he also criticized it, calling it a "clumsy, lifeless outing".[53] IGN named the film the worst comic book film of the decade.[citation needed]
The film was nominated for one Razzie Award for Nicolas Cage as Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor. However, the film was also nominated for Best Horror Film at the Saturn Awards.
A sequel, entitled Spirit of Vengeance, started filming in November 2010 and was released on February 17, 2012. Cage reprised his role as Johnny Blaze and also portrayed Johnny Blaze in his Ghost Rider form. Crank filmmakers Neveldine/Taylor directed the film. The film received worse reviews than its predecessor, but was still a financial success.
When asked about a potential third film Cage stated "It’s possible, but it won’t be with me."[54] In 2013 the rights reverted to Marvel Studios.[55]

ABOUT GHOST RIDER:SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a 2011 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics antihero Ghost Rider. It is a standalone sequel to the 2007 film Ghost Rider[7] and features Nicolas Cage reprising his role as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider[8] with supporting roles portrayed by Ciarán Hinds, Violante Placido, Johnny Whitworth, Christopher Lambert, and Idris Elba. The film was directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, from a screenplay written by Scott M. Gimple, Seth Hoffman, and David S. Goyer. Released publicly for one night in December 11, 2011, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance had its wide commercial release on February 17, 2012 in 2D and 3D.
The film experienced worse critical reception than the first film, with criticism being aimed towards the script, CGI, and acting.[9] The film grossed more than $132 million, against its $57 million production budget.[5]
Nicolas Cage stated that he was "done" with the Ghost Rider films and a planned sequel was cancelled. The film rights to the character reverted to Marvel Studios shortly thereafter,[10] and the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..
In Romania, an alcoholic French monk named Moreau warns a monastery about an impending attack by the devil's forces to obtain a boy named Danny. In the attack, Moreau tries to help the boy and his mother Nadya escape, but the distrusting Nadya shoots at Moreau and flees with her son. Believing that only the Ghost Rider can protect the boy, Moreau seeks the Rider's help.
Eight years have passed since Johnny Blaze became the Ghost Rider—a vengeful, fiery spirit who feeds on the evil of his victims and consumes the souls of sinners. The Rider does not differentiate between infractions—anything from genocide to a white lie—and Blaze is driven into hiding, fighting the evil spirit within him. In exchange for Blaze's help, Moreau promises to restore his soul and remove the Ghost Rider's curse.
Nadya and Danny's pursuers force them off the road and bring them to their leader: Nadya's former boyfriend Ray Carrigan. Carrigan is about to execute Nadya when the Ghost Rider appears, killing several of Carrigan's men. Nadya distracts the Ghost Rider, who is shot with grenades.
Johnny awakens in the hospital, leaving despite his injuries, and convinces Nadya to accept his help. Carrigan tells the demon Mephistopheles, in the form of Roarke, about the Rider, and Roarke speaks an incantation to Danny over the phone, preventing the Rider from sensing Danny's location. Warning that the spell will not shield Carrigan, Roarke gives him instructions to deliver to Danny. Nadya tells Blaze that as she lay dying, she made a deal with Roarke: her life in exchange for him impregnating her with Danny, making their son a direct vessel for Roarke, potentially giving him limitless power in the mortal world. Danny nearly escapes, but breaks his ankle and is recaptured.
That night, Nadya and Johnny interrogate a contact of Carrigan's. Johnny takes off to deal with Carrigan, and Nadya rescues Danny as the Rider converts a mining machine[11] into a massive fiery machine, destroying the hideout and mortally wounding Carrigan. When the Ghost Rider catches up to Nadya and uses his Penance Stare, Danny is able to stop him with a word.
Roarke turns Carrigan into the demon Blackout, capable of decaying anything he touches. Johnny and Nadya bring Danny to the monastery, where Moreau explains that the Ghost Rider is the twisted incarnation of the Spirit of Justice, Zarathos, after being captured and tortured in Hell. Moreau tells Johnny that he can exorcise the spirit if Johnny tells a secret only he knows. Johnny confesses that his deal with Roarke was a selfish one: his stepfather had accepted his cancer and was ready to die, which Johnny could not accept. Moreau exorcises the spirit and Johnny becomes human again. The head monk Methodius proclaims that Danny will never be safe from the influence of evil and must die, taking them captive to execute the boy. Carrigan intervenes, killing the monks and recapturing Danny.
With the ritual to transfer Roarke's spirit and power into Danny underway, Johnny, Nadya, and Moreau infiltrate the compound. Carrigan kills Moreau, but Danny returns the Ghost Rider's powers to Johnny, with Johnny becoming even more powerful as he is now able to stay in his Ghost Rider form in broad daylight where as before he could only do so while it was at night or within shadows during the day. Roarke escapes with Danny, pursued by the Ghost Rider and Nadya. The Rider defeats Carrigan, crashing the vehicle carrying Roarke and Danny. The Ghost Rider sends Roarke back to Hell while Danny, who had died in the crash, is returned to his mother. Channeling the blue flame of Zarathos, Johnny revives Danny and assures him he is safe, before the Ghost Rider rides off.
Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider: A motorcycle stunt man who sold his soul to the devil to save his father from cancer, and became the devil's servant called the Spirit of Vengeance, a fiery spirit that feeds on the evil of its victims.
Ionut Cristian Lefter as Young Johnny Blaze. Matt Long, who portrayed the character in the first film was originally set to reprise the role, but was eventually replaced by Lefter.
Johnny Whitworth as Ray Carrigan / Blackout:[12] A mercenary, drug dealer, and gun runner turned into Blackout by the devil to complete his job. This transformation gives him the fortitude and supernatural abilities to compete with Ghost Rider.[13] Carrigan's powers are completely unlike those of the comic book character; writers admitted that the only aspect of Blackout they used in designing the movie version was his appearance.[14]
Fergus Riordan as Danny Ketch: A young child caught up in a demonic conspiracy who ends up in the care of Johnny Blaze during his travels.
Ciarán Hinds as Roarke / Mephistopheles: The demon who transformed Johnny Blaze in the Ghost Rider. Mephisto has fathered a child named Danny, and has plans for the boy.[15] Peter Fonda, who portrayed the character in the first film, had previously expressed interest in reprising the role.[16]

Jacek Koman as Terrokov
Vincent Regan as Toma Nikasevic: An arms dealer who works with Carrigan.

On February 9, 2007, Marvel producer Avi Arad announced the development of Ghost Rider 2 at a press event.[21] Peter Fonda had also expressed a desire to return as Mephistopheles.[22] In early December, 2007, Nicolas Cage also expressed interest to return in the lead role as Ghost Rider.[23] Shortly after, in another interview he went on further to mention that he would enjoy seeing a darker story, adding, "He's not eating jelly beans anymore; he's getting drunk". He suggested that the film could do with newly created villains.[24] It was also rumored that the sequel would feature Danny Ketch, another Marvel character who took up the Ghost Rider mantle in the comics.[25]
In a September 2008 interview, Cage informed IGN that Columbia had taken meetings to start a sequel. Cage noted conversations about the story, where Ghost Rider may end up in Europe on behalf of the church, having story elements "very much in the zeitgeist, like Da Vinci Code."[27] In February 2009, an online source stated Columbia Pictures had greenlit a sequel to Ghost Rider. Nicolas Cage was stated to reprise the lead role, whilst the studio were in search of writers.[28] On September 23, 2009, it was reported that David S. Goyer had signed on to write the script for the sequel.[29] Goyer spoke to MTV about the sequel, stating that the story would pick up eight years after the events of the first film and that he hopes to start filming by 2010.[26][30] On July 14, 2010 it was confirmed that Nicolas Cage would return, and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were announced to direct the film, with editor Brian Berdan and cinematographer Brandon Trost reuniting with the directors from the Crank films.[31] Taylor said this version of Ghost Rider was darker than the first film, and will be based on the miniseries Ghost Rider: Road to Damnation by Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain.[32]
Christopher Lambert underwent three months of sword training[33] and shaved his head for his role.[34]
In July 2010, Cage revealed shooting was to start in November.[35] In an interview with Superhero Hype!, Eva Mendes revealed that she would not be back as Roxanne for the sequel.[36] The film was shot in Romania and Turkey.[37] The film started principal photography in Sibiu, Romania in November 2010, using mostly local talent.[8] Principal photography was completed on January 24, 2011.[38] On March 16, 2011, it was confirmed that Johnny Whitworth would be playing the villain Blackout.[13] The film was shot in 2D and converted in post-production to 3D.[39]
Three scenes were shot on set Castel Film Romania. Among the places in the country chosen were Transfăgărăşan, Targu-Jiu, Hunedoara Castle and Bucharest.[40]
Filming in Turkey took place in Cappadocia, a historical region in central Turkey with exotic chimney-topped rocky setting. The scene with the Greco-Roman theatre was filmed in Pamukkale where the ancient Greek (of the Seleucid Empire) city of Hierapolis once stood.
The motorcycle used by Cage was a Yamaha VMAX.[32]
The film opened in 3,174 theaters at #3, with North American box office receipts of $22.1 million, behind Safe House, which moved to #1 on its second weekend. The Vow, the holdover from the previous week, made less than half of Ghost Rider's opening weekend of $45.4 million. It went on to gross $51.8 million at the U.S. box office and $80.8 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $132.6 million.[5]
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance holds an approval rating of 18%, based on 113 reviews, and an average rating of 3.82/10. The website's consensus reads, "With a weak script, uneven CG work, and a Nic Cage performance so predictably loony it's no longer amusing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aims to be trashy fun but ends up as plain trash."[9] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 34 out of 100, based on 22 critics, indicating "Generally unfavorable reviews".[41] Audiences polled by Cinemascore gave the film a C+ rating on a scale from A to F.[42]
Reviewers who viewed an early preview screening at the December 2011 Butt-Numb-A-Thon in Austin expressed negative reactions to the film. Two attendees said it was worse than the first Ghost Rider film, and one said that the sequel makes the first film "look like The Dark Knight" by comparison.[43]
IGN reviewer Scott Collura gave the movie four out of five stars, saying it "is a movie you'll either love or hate". He commends the film for bringing the cartoonish insanity of the Crank movies to insane concept of Ghost Rider.[44] Andrew Barker of Variety called it a marginal improvement on the first film but said "The picture is still much too rickety, slapdash and surprisingly dull to qualify as a good barrel-bottom pleasure."[45] Ben Sachs of the Chicago Reader notes that this is the first time directors Neveldine and Taylor have directed a script they didn't write, and "and the superhero plot often seems to hamper their imaginations" but says the film "doesn't lack for crazy charm", praising Cage and Hinds for their admittedly weird performances.[46]
Marc Savlov from The Austin Chronicle awarded the film 1.5 out of 5 stars, writing, "Cage appears to find his role as this second-tier Marvel Comics antihero alternately silly, tremendously fun, and the means to a decent paycheck for not all that much work." Savlov also criticized the film's use of 3D as being "a few shots of flaming motorcycle parts comin' at ya, but little else."[47] Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club welcomed Idris Elba's role as the alcoholic priest Moreau, but criticized the film for "squandering even more potential" and that it fails to achieve the "go-for-broke energy of superior trash."[48] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called the film "a dreadful mess", and "a dishwater dull sequel to the hellishly bad 2007 original", and said he'd never seen worse 3D.[49]
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was nominated for two Golden Raspberry Awards:[50] Worst Actor (Nicolas Cage; also for Seeking Justice) and Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.
In February 2012, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor discussed producing a potential Ghost Rider 3, and having someone else direct it.[51] Neveldine told The Playlist that Cage had expressed interest in appearing in another Ghost Rider film, hinting that the film could move forward provided that Spirit of Vengeance was a success, saying, "I know Nic wants to do it, he's very pumped about it ... We'll just have to see how well [this] does."[52] In March 2013, when Cage was asked about a possible third installment, he said, "It's possible, but it won't be with me ... Anything's possible. But I doubt, highly, that I would be in the third installment of that."[53] Cage said in 2013 he believes another Ghost Rider film might happen "down the road", saying, "It would be interesting if they did it with a female Ghost Rider." He added, "Personally, I'm done. I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done."[54]
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced on May 2, 2013, that the film rights to Ghost Rider had reverted to Marvel Studios, but there were no immediate plans to make another Ghost Rider film.[55][56] The Robbie Reyes incarnation of the character appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where he is portrayed by Gabriel Luna.[57]

ABOUT STAR WARS:THE RISE OF SKYWALKER 2019
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (also known as Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker) is a 2019 American epic space opera film produced, co-written, and directed by J. J. Abrams. It is the third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017), and the final episode of the nine-part "Skywalker saga."[a] It was produced by Lucasfilm and Abrams' production company Bad Robot Productions and was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film's ensemble cast includes Carrie Fisher,[b] Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong'o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams.
The Rise of Skywalker follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they lead the Resistance's final stand against Kylo Ren and the First Order, who are now aided by the return of the deceased galactic emperor, Palpatine. Following initial reports that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would write the script for Episode IX, in August 2015, Colin Trevorrow was hired to direct and to write a script with his collaborator Derek Connolly; both ultimately retain story credit with Abrams and Chris Terrio. In September 2017, Trevorrow left the project following creative differences with producer Kathleen Kennedy, and Abrams returned as director. Principal photography began in August 2018 at Pinewood Studios in England and wrapped in February 2019. Post-production was completed on November 24, 2019. With an estimated budget of $275 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made.
The film had its world premiere in Los Angeles on December 16, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on December 20, 2019. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the acting, action sequences, musical score, and visual effects, but criticized the story, pacing, and perceived departures from the plot and themes of The Last Jedi. It grossed over $1.074 billion worldwide, becoming the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2019 and the 32nd-highest-grossing film of all time, and although it was the lowest-grossing installment of the trilogy, still turned a $300 million profit. The film received three nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards (Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing)[7] as well as three at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards (also Best Special Visual Effects, Best Original Music, and Best Sound).[8]
Following a threat of revenge by the revived Emperor Palpatine, Kylo Ren obtains a Sith wayfinder, leading him to the uncharted planet Exegol. There, he finds Palpatine, who reveals that he created Snoke as a puppet to control the First Order and lure Kylo to the dark side. Palpatine unveils the Final Order—a secret armada of Star Destroyers—and tells Kylo to find and kill Rey, who is continuing her Jedi training under Resistance leader Leia Organa. Finn and Poe Dameron deliver intelligence from a spy that Palpatine is on Exegol; Rey has learned from Luke Skywalker's notes that a Sith wayfinder can lead them there. Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, BB-8, and C-3PO depart in the Millennium Falcon to Pasaana, where a clue to a wayfinder is hidden.
Kylo initiates a Force bond with Rey to discover her location; he travels to Pasaana with his warrior subordinates, the Knights of Ren. With the help of Lando Calrissian, Rey and her friends find the clue—a dagger inscribed with Sith text, which C-3PO's programming forbids him from interpreting—and the remains of a Jedi hunter named Ochi and his ship. Sensing that Kylo is nearby, Rey goes to confront him. The First Order captures the Falcon, Chewbacca, and the dagger; attempting to save Chewbacca, Rey accidentally destroys a First Order transport with Force lightning. Believing Chewbacca to be dead, the group escapes on Ochi's ship.
The group travels to Kijimi, where a droidsmith extracts the Sith text from C-3PO's memory, revealing coordinates to a wayfinder. Rey senses Chewbacca is alive, and the group mounts a rescue mission to Kylo's Star Destroyer. Rey recovers the dagger and has visions of Ochi killing her parents with it. Kylo informs her that she is Palpatine's granddaughter; the Sith Lord had ordered Ochi to recover Rey as a child, but her parents hid her on Jakku to protect her. General Hux saves Poe, Finn, and Chewbacca from execution, revealing himself as the spy. He permits the group to escape on the Falcon, but is discovered and killed by Allegiant General Pryde. The group flies the Falcon to the wayfinder's coordinates on a moon in the Endor system.
Rey retrieves the wayfinder from the remains of the second Death Star, but she is met by Kylo, who destroys the wayfinder and duels her. In a dying act, Leia calls to Kylo through the Force, distracting him as Rey impales him. Sensing Leia's death, Rey heals Kylo and takes his ship to exile herself on Ahch-To. There, Luke's Force spirit encourages Rey to face Palpatine and gives her Leia's lightsaber. Rey leaves for Exegol in Luke's X-wing fighter, using the wayfinder from Kylo's ship. Meanwhile, Kylo converses with a memory of his father, Han Solo; he throws away his lightsaber and reclaims his identity as Ben Solo. Sensing Leia's passing and Ben's return, Palpatine sends one of his superlaser-equipped Star Destroyers to obliterate Kijimi as a show of force. The Resistance, led by Poe and Finn, prepare to attack the Final Order fleet.
Rey transmits her coordinates to R2-D2, allowing the Resistance to follow her to Exegol. There, she confronts Palpatine; he demands that she kill him for his spirit to pass into her. Lando brings reinforcements from across the galaxy to join the battle. Ben overpowers the Knights of Ren and joins Rey, but Palpatine drains their power to rejuvenate himself. He attacks the Resistance fleet with Force lightning and incapacitates Ben. Weakened, Rey hears the voices of past Jedi, who lend her their strength. Palpatine attacks her with lightning, but Rey deflects it using Luke and Leia's lightsabers,[c] killing Palpatine and herself. Ben uses the Force to revive her at the cost of his own life; Rey kisses Ben before he dies. The Resistance defeats Palpatine's armada, while people across the galaxy rise up against the First Order. The Resistance returns to their base to celebrate.
After the celebration, Rey visits Luke's abandoned childhood home on Tatooine and buries his and Leia's lightsabers, having built her own. A passerby asks her name; as the spirits of Luke and Leia watch, she replies, "Rey Skywalker."

In October 2012, Star Wars creator George Lucas sold his production company Lucasfilm, and with it the Star Wars franchise, to The Walt Disney Company.[40] Disney subsequently announced the Star Wars sequel trilogy.[41] In June 2014, it was announced that Rian Johnson, writer and director of The Last Jedi, would write a story treatment for Episode IX.[42] In August 2015, Colin Trevorrow was announced as the director of the film;[43] he was to write the script with frequent collaborator Derek Connolly.[43][44] In April 2017, Johnson stated that he was not involved in writing the film.[45] In February 2016, Disney chief executive officer Bob Iger confirmed that pre-production on Episode IX had begun.[46] Carrie Fisher died in December 2016. Her brother Todd later said, "She was going to be the big payoff in the final film. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak."[47]
In late April 2017, Disney announced that the film would be released on May 24, 2019.[48] A month later, filming was expected to begin in January 2018,[49] but this was later pushed back to August. In August 2017, it was announced that Jack Thorne would rewrite the script.[50] On September 5, 2017, Lucasfilm stated that Trevorrow had left the production following creative differences.[51] The Hollywood Reporter reported that his working relationship with Kathleen Kennedy had become unmanageable after failing to deliver a satisfactory script, despite writing several drafts.[52] Johnson was rumored as the top choice to replace Trevorrow as director,[53] but stated "it was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX."[54] The next day, it was announced that J. J. Abrams, the director of The Force Awakens, would return to direct the film,[55] and that the film's release date would be moved to December 20, 2019.[56] The story team met with George Lucas before writing the new script,[57] which Abrams co-wrote with Chris Terrio,[58] while Trevorrow and Connolly retained story credits.[59][60][f] The story was rewritten to some extent before filming was completed.[63] The film was produced by Abrams's company Bad Robot Productions, Kathleen Kennedy, and Michelle Rejwan.[58]Before filming, Episode IX was initially given the working title Black Diamond, which was then changed to TrIXie in 2018,[64] most likely to insert the roman numeral "IX" within the working title.[65] The title, The Rise of Skywalker, was announced at April 2019's Star Wars Celebration in Chicago.[66]
Carrie Fisher, who played Leia Organa, died on December 27, 2016. Variety and Reuters reported that she had been planned for a key role in Episode IX.[67] In January 2017, Lucasfilm stated that there were no plans to digitally generate Fisher's performance as they had for Rogue One.[68] The following April, Fisher's brother Todd revealed that Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, had granted Disney the rights to use recent footage of Fisher.[69] However, a week later, Kathleen Kennedy stated that Fisher would not appear in the film.[70][71] In July 2018, J. J. Abrams announced that unused footage of Fisher from The Force Awakens would be used to help complete the story.[9][10][72][g] In flashback scenes, digital de-aging was used for the appearance of Luke and Leia through the use of facial shots of both characters from the Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi respectively.[73]
In July 2018, Keri Russell was in talks to play a part with some "action-heavy fight scenes",[74] and it was confirmed that Billy Dee Williams would return as Lando Calrissian,[75] onscreen for the first time since 1983's Return of the Jedi—marking one of the longest intervals between portrayals of a character by the same actor in American film history.[29][h] At the end of July, Russell was confirmed to have been cast,[76] and there was an announcement of returning and additional new cast members.[1] In late August, Deadline Hollywood announced that Dominic Monaghan and Matt Smith had been cast in unspecified roles,[77][78] but Smith later denied his involvement.[79][i] Greg Grunberg reprises his role as Temmin "Snap" Wexley.[31] Jimmy Vee stated on Twitter that he would be reprising the role of R2-D2, but in the final film the droid was credited to Hassan Taj and Lee Towersey.[82][35] Brian Herring returns to puppeteer BB-8.[83]
At Star Wars Celebration in April 2019, it was revealed via the film's teaser trailer that Ian McDiarmid would return to portray Palpatine.[25] Since the event was held after principal photography wrapped, Abrams was thrilled that news of McDiarmid on the set never leaked.[84] Kathleen Kennedy said they decided to reveal Palpatine's return ahead of the film's release because "many of the characters that are playing a significant role in the story, the fans know. They don't know how this story is going to unfold, but they know who they are. It's not like Baby Yoda," the surprise popular character from The Mandalorian.[85]
Principal photography began on August 1, 2018, at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England.[1] Filming also took place in Wadi Rum, Jordan.[86] Oscar Isaac stated that Abrams was allowing more improvised acting than in the previous two films.[87] Due to the tight schedule, some editing took place on set.[88] Principal photography wrapped on February 15, 2019.[89] Footage from the film was shown at The Walt Disney Company's annual shareholders meeting on March 7, 2019.[90] Reshoots took place at Bad Robot Productions between late September and mid-October.[91]
The visual effects were created by Industrial Light & Magic and supervised by Roger Guyett.[92] The film finished post-production on November 25, 2019. After Boyega accidentally left a copy of the script in his hotel room, it was listed on eBay for around £65. A Disney employee identified the script as authentic and purchased it from the seller for an undisclosed sum.[93][94][95]
Lucasfilm honored Riley Howell, a student and Star Wars fan who heroically died at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte shooting in April 2019, by naming a Jedi after him in its book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – The Visual Dictionary. The book credits "Ri-Lee Howell" with collecting "many of the earliest accounts of exploration and codifications of The Force."[96]
On January 10, 2018, it was confirmed that John Williams would return to compose and conduct The Rise of Skywalker.[97][98] The next month, Williams announced that it would be the last Star Wars film for which he would compose the score.[99] In August 2019, it was revealed that Williams had written about 35 of an expected 135 minutes of music for the film, which according to Williams's brother Don, would incorporate all of the major themes of the Skywalker saga.[100] Scoring began in July 2019 with Williams and William Ross conducting and orchestrating the sessions over the course of six months.[101] Walt Disney Records released the soundtrack album digitally on December 18, 2019, with a physical release following on December 20.[102]
Despite staying silent about many details of the film, Abrams expressed his hopes that fans and general audiences would be "satisfied".[103] He headed a panel dedicated to the film on April 12, 2019, during Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Illinois,[104] where the film's title was revealed via the first trailer, and new images were shown.[66] The trailer was viewed 111 million times in the first 24 hours of its release, which was 20 million more views than the teaser for The Last Jedi and more than double that of The Force Awakens.[105]
A publishing campaign titled "Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" was announced on May 4, 2019 (Star Wars Day). It includes the novel Resistance Reborn, set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and various other titles.[106] Additionally, the story events of the Disneyland themed area Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge precede the film, including the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run motion simulator, which features Chewbacca.[107] On August 24, a new poster and "sizzle reel" was released at D23;[24] the latter was released to the public two days later. The footage includes a montage of the Skywalker saga so far, as well as several new shots from the film.[108] The final trailer was released on October 21, 2019 during Monday Night Football.[109]
In December 2019, the video game Fortnite Battle Royale released several cosmetics featuring character skins for Rey, Finn, a Sith Trooper, Kylo Ren, and Zorii Bliss along with a TIE Fighter glider, a Millennium Falcon glider (which was given to players for free from the Winterfest Event), four emotes, and two free banners.[110] On December 14, Fortnite's publisher Epic Games released a preview of the film on an in-game theater screen as a live event.[111] At the end of the event, a message from Palpatine (the one mentioned in the film's opening crawl) was heard.[112] To coincide with the release of the film, a trailer for the forthcoming video game, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was released on the same day.[113]
The film was originally planned to be released on May 24, 2019, in the United States before being pushed back to December 20, giving the original release date to Disney's live-action adaptation of Aladdin.[48][56] It had its world premiere in Los Angeles on December 16.[114] Unlike most studio films, Disney reportedly did not hold test screenings for The Rise of Skywalker, instead only showing it to Abrams' friends and family, as well as a terminally ill fan.[115][116]
A shot near the end of the film, featuring two female Resistance members kissing, was cut in Dubai and Singapore.[117][118]
Disney issued a warning that the scenes with strobe-like flashing lights may trigger photosensitive migraines and seizures during some of those scenes.[119]
The Rise of Skywalker was scheduled to be released on Digital HD on March 17, 2020, but was released four days early in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic.[120] Its DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD release was followed on March 31 by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.[121] The 4K version of the film was also released in "The Skywalker Saga" 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray box set on March 31, 2020. It was released on Disney+ on May 4, 2020—which is reportedly two months ahead of its previously scheduled release date.[122]
The official novelization is by Rae Carson: hardcover and audiobook versions were released on March 19, 2020. The novel details Palpatine's return in more depth; according to the novelization, Palpatine transferred his consciousness into a clone body following his death in Return of the Jedi.[123][124] The junior novel and corresponding audiobook are by Michael Kogge and was released on April 21, 2020. Additionally, Marvel Comics will release a five-issue adaptation beginning in June.[125]
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed $515.2 million in the United States and Canada, and $558.9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.074 billion.[4][5] Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit of the film to be $300 million, when factoring together all expenses and revenues.[126]
Pre-sale tickets went on sale on October 21, 2019 and the film sold more tickets in their first hour of availability on Atom Tickets than the previous record-holder for ticket sales, Avengers: Endgame. It became Atom Tickets' second-best first-day seller of all-time behind Endgame, selling more than twice the number of tickets as The Last Jedi sold in that same timeframe, while Fandango reported it outsold all previous Star Wars films.[109][127] Box office tracking had The Rise of Skywalker grossing around $205 million in its opening weekend, though some firms predicted a debut closer to $175 million.[128] The film made $89.6 million on its first day, including $40 million from Thursday night previews, the sixth-highest opening day of all-time.[129][130] It went on to debut to $177.4 million, which was the third-highest opening ever for a December release and the 12th-best all-time, and it was also noted that Saturday (which saw a 47% drop from Friday's gross) was the busiest shopping day of the year, likely affecting ticket sales.[131][132][133] However, Deadline Hollywood did write that "we can't ignore" the less than stellar audience exit scores, which could affect the film's legs moving forward.[131] The film made $32 million on Christmas Day, the second-best total ever for the holiday after The Force Awakens' $49.3 million in 2015.[134] It went on to have a five-day total of $135.2 million, including $72.4 million for the weekend.[135][136][137] In its third weekend the film made $34.5 million, remaining in first,[138][139] before being dethroned in its fourth weekend by newcomer 1917.[140]
Worldwide the film was projected to gross around $450 million in its opening weekend, including $250 million from 52 international territories.[141] It made $59.1 million from its first day of international release in 46 countries. The biggest markets were the United Kingdom ($8.3 million), Germany ($7.2 million), France ($5.3 million) and Australia ($4.3 million).[142] In China the film made $1.6 million (RMB11.6 million) through its first day.[143] It went on to open to $198 million from overseas countries and $373.5 million worldwide, coming in below projections and 47% lower than The Last Jedi's total. Its biggest opening totals remained the UK ($26.8 million), Germany ($21.8 million), France ($15.2 million), Japan ($14.6 million), Australia ($12.6 million), and China ($12.1 million).[142]
Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 52% based on 483 reviews, with an average rating of 6.15/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "The Rise of Skywalker suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination, but concludes this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion."[144] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 53 out of 100, based on 61 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[145]
Richard Roeper, reviewing for the Chicago Sun-Times, gave the film three out of four stars, writing that it "rarely comes close to touching greatness, but it's a solid, visually dazzling and warmhearted victory [for] quality filmmaking."[146] The A.V. Club's A. A. Dowd gave the film a C+, stating that the film "is so freighted with obligation that it almost groans under the weight, flashing a weak smile as it vaguely approximates the appearance of a zippy good time."[147] The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy wrote, "A plot like this, featuring so many characters, locations and story dynamics, can by nature be confusing; so relentless is the pileup of incident that, at a certain point, one can be excused for checking out on the particulars ... in favor of just going along for the amusement park ride."[148] Michael Phillips for Chicago Tribune wrote that the film "does the job. It wraps up the trio of trilogies begun in 1977 in a confident, soothingly predictable way, doing all that is cinematically possible to avoid [upsetting the] tradition-minded quadrants of the Star Wars fan base."[149] Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "For about 75% of its running time, The Rise of Skywalker is a disappointment. Still, for all the movie's faults, it's likely that most people will consider The Rise of Skywalker and accept the trade: Sit through a so-so 110 minutes to get to a strong half hour."[150]
Owen Gleiberman of Variety called the film "the most elegant, emotionally rounded, and gratifying Star Wars adventure since the glory days of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back ... but given the last eight films, the bar isn't that high."[151] The BBC's Nicholas Barber wrote that "the film is well acted, [and] looks so good that there is bound to be a fabulous tie-in coffee-table book of concept art, and it has a positive message about never giving up hope. But the main feeling it instills in the viewer is a renewed respect for the imagination of Lucas. The Rise of Skywalker has been lovingly crafted by a host of talented people, and yet the best they can do is pay tribute to everything he did several decades ago."[152]
Scott Mendelson for Forbes described the film as "possibly worse than any prior Star Wars 'episode'. It ends a legendary franchise with a thud while denying this new trilogy its artistic reason for existence." He said that "the 142-minute movie spends almost its entire running time retconning its predecessor and adding painfully conventional 'plot twists' and patronizing reversals in the name of mollifying the fans who merely want to be reminded of the first three movies."[153] Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the film "nakedly offers itself up in the spirit of a Last Jedi corrective, a return to storytelling basics, a nearly 2½-hour compendium of everything that made you fall in love with Star Wars in the first place. The more accurate way to describe it ... is as an epic failure of nerve. This Rise feels more like a retreat, a return to a zone of emotional and thematic safety from a filmmaker with a gift for packaging nostalgia as subversion."[154] Writing for The New Yorker, Richard Brody states that the film's faults "are those of the franchise over all, distilled and magnified because the film's director, J. J. Abrams is mainly a distiller and a magnifier and brings virtually no originality to it. His earnest and righteously grandiose direction evokes, as few movies do, a craving for Michael Bay at the controls."[155]
Whereas Kelly Marie Tran had around 10 minutes of screentime in The Last Jedi, she appears for about a minute in The Rise of Skywalker. The reduced role was interpreted by some critics as a concession to fans who disliked her character;[156] Tran had been a target of online harassment following the release of The Last Jedi. Screenwriter Chris Terrio said Tran had reduced screentime because of the difficulty of including the late Carrie Fisher in scenes planned to feature both characters.[157]
According to CinemaScore, American audiences gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale; by comparison, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi each earned an "A" score and all three of the prequels an "A–".[158] On PostTrak, audiences gave the film an average 4 out of 5 stars, with 70% saying they would definitely recommend it; parents and children under 12 years old (who made up 16% of opening night attendance) gave it a full five out of five stars. Men (who made up 67% of the audience) gave the film an overall positive score of 80% while women (33%) gave it an 84%.[131][159] RelishMix, which tracks social media posts and online presence, "noticed a divided reaction to Skywalker online, though it leaned slightly positive".[131]
Months prior to the film's trailer release, it was review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes to the point where the "Want to See" percentage went down as far as 5% within a day, with many of the reviews focusing on lingering negativity towards The Last Jedi.[160] Similar bombing with Captain Marvel caused Rotten Tomatoes to completely remove the "Want to See" feature after temporarily changing it to a number.[160]
