Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language horror thriller film written and directed by Bhanu Pratap Singh and jointly produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shashank Khaitan. It is based on a true accident that took place in Mumbai, about the MV Wisdom incident, and tells the story of an officer who has to move an abandoned but haunted ship lying static on Juhu beach. The film features Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles,[4][5] and is the first film of a planned horror film franchise.
Principal photography began in December 2018 and was wrapped up in September 2019.[6] It was theatrically released in India on February 21, 2020.[7]
The film begins in 2001, with a video of a newly born baby, Meera. On her third birthday, Meera's parents celebrate with a party on a ship called The Sea-Bird, along with the crew of the ship. Meera's father is shown to be a merchant navy officer on the ship. Her parents and the crew are busy partying when Meera hears a snapping sound and follows it down to the basement of the ship.
Suddenly, she is thrown in the air by an unknown spirit and loses her grip on her doll, which she holds dear. As she tries to gain control of the doll, the spirit grabs her and drags her in the air, while Meera screams for her doll.
A couple of years later, Prithvi, a shipping officer (Vicky Kaushal) with the help of his friend & colleague Riaz elopes with his girlfriend Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar). They get married in a court, and Sapna reveals to Prithvi that she is pregnant.
Prithvi investigates a shipping port and discovers a shipping container carrying girls that were supposed to be shipped out. He successfully foils human trafficking. His friend advises him not to go on such adventures again. Prithvi & Sapna are blessed with a baby girl, Megha. They enjoy playing together and spend time with each other until Megha is around 5–6 years old.
Now, Prithvi is shown alone, seemingly apart from his wife and child. Meanwhile, the abandoned Sea-Bird is suddenly located on an unmanned port. Prithvi and Riaz are assigned to investigate the Sea-Bird. Prithvi discovers a film tape and log records and takes them for further research and evidence. Previously, a couple is shown on this ship playing romance and suddenly an unknown woman kills both of them.
One day, 2 guys walk around the beach cleaning the beach, and they find a T-shirt under which a girl's dead body is found, having been gruesomely buried. Prithvi is given the responsibility to move the Sea-Bird from this port for disposal. He and Riaz try to move it by tying it to another ship, but the attempt fails, and the salvage ship starts fuming. Suddenly, Prithvi notices one man drowning while the ship is moving. He runs to the sea and swims in mid of the sea to save this man and sees a girl inside the ship's hole. Meanwhile, Riaz sends the crew to save Prithvi and succeeds. Prithvi is hospitalized, as he was slightly injured.
Prithvi starts having hallucinations of the Sea-Bird as well as Sapna and Megha. It is revealed then that Sapna and Megha died during a surprise family vacation Prithvi had planned. Prithvi planned going river rafting with Megha and Sapna despite Sapna saying it was not a good idea since they did not have life vests for children. He insists that everything will be fine, convincing Sapna to join with Megha. A heavy tide knocks the raft sideways causing everyone to fall off and subsequently causing Sapna to hit her head on a rock and Megha's loose life jacket to fall off causing her to drown with her mother. Disturbed by everything, he calls Riaz at midnight and Riaz's wife advises him to see Professor Raghuveer Joshi (Ashutosh Rana), who is doing research on souls and afterlife. Prithvi does not believe him, but the professor discloses that he also has hallucinations of his dead wife and daughter. Now, Prithvi is convinced. Prithvi returns to the ship to investigate further and finds a video camera in the engine room. Soon, however, the ghost starts to attack him, and he loses his way back. He is saved by Riaz, who also encounters the ghost but manages to escape the ship.
Prithvi is convinced after watching the videos that there is a girl trapped in the ship. Prithvi decides to save her at any cost. Upon further investigation, he comes to know that the girl is none other than Meera, who is possessed and has been living on the ship for the past 11 years. He goes to the professor and tells him about the videos. The professor tells him that he should find who has possessed Meera in order to save her, but Riaz is wary of this, as he believes that their job is not about ghosts and possessions.
The same evening, when Prithvi is watching the video again, he finds that the crew of 2001 committed suicide, except for two, one of whom is Meera. Suddenly his TV remote falls on the ground resulting in the fast-forwarding of the video. He is able to see an unknown man from the crew, about whom he grows suspicious. Upon further digging into this matter, Prithvi finds out that the only other survivor was Meera's mother, Vandana, who is also present in the video. Meanwhile, Riaz says that he now believes him. Prithvi and Riaz meet Meera's mother Vandana (Meher Vij) in a Church and play the same recording, which has Meera's 3-year-old birthday. Afterward, Prithvi asks about the unknown man from the recording.
Vandana tells Prithvi that Sea-Bird was involved in many illegal activities, including the shipping of various drugs. Anyone from the crew who raised their voice against the captain had to die. The captain assaulted Vandana and Amar, the unknown man, saved her from committing suicide. She also adds that the captain had created a secret room for managing all the illegal businesses.
Amar and Vandana fell for each other. They planned to flee from the ship. In order to bring down the captain, they start recording all of the illegal businesses. The captain caught Amar snooping around, and he tortured him to gain the evidence. Vandana adds that Amar died after 2 days. Later, she says that the child she is carrying is Amar's, and his ghost tracks anyone down who tries to enter the Sea-Bird. He has also kept Meera with him, as she is his daughter. Vandana informs Prithvi that she is the only person who can take them to the secret chamber on the ship.
Prithvi, Vandana, Riaz, and the professor go on the ship, as they have only that night to save Meera, as the next day the ship was to be towed away. There, they encounter the ghost and must fight. During the fight, Prithvi learns that it was Vandana who killed Amar to save herself from torture, as Amar's spirit, which had possessed Meera, appears.
Vandana pleads for her daughter's life, but she is killed in an instant. Riaz sets the diesel to leak in the ship and runs away, and Prithvi realizes there is very little time left. Amar also kills Raghuveer. He attempts to kill Prithvi too, but Prithvi finds Amar's body still hanging in the same secret chamber in which he was hanged for torture. He burns the body, causing Amar's spirit to be disintegrated. He rescues Meera and exits the ship via the damaged hole.
Later, Prithvi is shown teaching Meera how to eat noodles.
In the mid-credits, a black figure is seen moving around Prithvi's home, possibly Amar's spirit.
In January 2018, it was reported that Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar have signed a horror film produced by Karan Johar together.[8] The filming began in December 2018, with Kaushal, while Pednekar filmed her portions in late January.[9] Kaushal fractured his cheekbone while shooting for an action sequence in Gujarat. A door fell on him which resulted in him getting 13 stitches.[10] The shooting of the film ended on 3 September 2019 as Kaushal shared a post on his Instagram account.
The two official posters of the film were unveiled on 19 July 2019 by Kaushal with the release date. Another set of posters were released on 13 September. A week later, on 20 September, a poster was unveiled to announce the new release date. The film released two new posters on 30 January 2020.[11]
The film was initially set to release on 15 November 2019 but later it got delayed and finally released theatrically on 21 February 2020.[12]
The official teaser of the film was released on 31 January 2020 by Dharma Productions.[13] The official trailer of the film was released on 3 February 2020 by Dharma Productions.[14]
The film is now available to watch on Amazon Prime.
Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship earned ₹5.10 crore net at the domestic box office on its opening day. On the second day, the film collected ₹5.52 crore. On the third day, the film collected ₹5.74 crores taking the total opening weekend collection to ₹16.36 crores.[3]
As of 19 March 2020, with a gross of ₹38.06 crore in India and ₹2.88 crore overseas, the film has a worldwide gross collection of ₹40.94 crore.[3]
